There’s a belief that high achievers, even Olympic athletes, are often driven by deep pain. I can relate.
When I was just 3 years old, my father abandoned our family. He remarried, started a new life and never looked back. I am 63 years old now, and he has never once acknowledged me. That kind of rejection leaves a scar — a lifelong ache, a feeling of unworthiness that never fully fades. For much of my life, I pushed myself to be great, holding onto the quiet hope that maybe, one day, he’d notice me. He hasn’t. He won’t.
But I’ve found healing through motion, expression, and purpose. Sports saved me. Skating gave me confidence, a community, and a way to channel everything I felt inside. It led me to a career I love — as a coach and the proud owner of my own skating schools. I know what it’s like to struggle. I watched my mother work tirelessly to make ends meet, supported by the kindness of the extended family. Without that help, I may not have had access to the opportunities that changed my life.
That’s why I created Art In Motion, Nepal. Because I know deep in my heart, that sports, dance, art & music can transform a child’s world. No child should ever feel left out, less than, or unworthy because of their family circumstances. And no child should have to carry pain alone.
Giving these children a chance to dream, express themselves, and shine helps me carry my own pain with more peace.
It turns hurt into hope — and that, to me, is the greatest motion of all.
